Essays about Social Change

A Journey of a Thousand Miles – by Rabin Gurung

“A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” Lao Tzu, a Chinese philosopher, said.  He was considered the father of Chinese Taoism, a philosophy that advocates living a simple life. To me this quote means a journey with amazing adventures and experiences cannot begin without taking one step towards that journey.
This quote is important to me because it reminds me of my student life in Nepal. I was at elementary school in grade two. In that moment, I made a goal to move in higher classes. I studied really hard and focused in each class every day. My studies were going smoothly day by day. Sometimes I struggled to go to school on a rainy day. It was strange and difficult for us to go school because there was strong rain falling from the sky. At that same time, there was also wind, so it was hard for us to go to school while there was rain. However, my studies continued going step by step in my elementary school. At last, I reached my goal and moved on to higher classes.
I agree with this quote because we all have to move on step by step to reach our goals. For each work we are doing, first we have to move step by step. We don’t reach randomly to our destination. We need to move on step by step to get success. If we are afraid to make that journey we will never reach our destination.
One example of this is Mahatma Gandhi. He was born on October 2, 1869, and he was a leader of Indian nationalism. Mahatma Gandhi led India to Independence through non-violence, securing civil rights and freedom for his country. Every person of his country chose him to be their country’s leader. Then, Gandhi started to lead his country and people. In his life, he faced many challenges, but he never gave up. He tried to move on step by step to bring independence, civil rights and freedom for his country. He led his country in a right way that everyone was willing to work on together with him. Then, he started to bring civil rights and freedom in his country of India. Gandhi fought 34 years to bring independence and civil rights to his country.
Another great example of a person who illustrates Lao Tzu’s idea for success was Prithvi Narayan Shah. He was born on January 7, 1723 and he was the first king of Nepal. First, he had a great dream to win over the Nuwakot district because his father had lost a war with Nuwakot. Nuwakot was the district headquarters. When he became king, there was not a single country. It was divided into 52 districts. Each district had their own rules and rights. It was divided into 52 different districts because there were not good relationships. Prithvi Narayan Shah wanted to make one single powerful country. Then, he started war with Nuwakot district to make one single country. At last, he won the Nuwakot district. He made one single country so that everyone should follow the same laws. First, he made a plan to make one single country. Then, he worked step by step to win Nuwakot district and make one single strong and peaceful country.
In conclusion, we must move step by step to get success. Every work we are doing requires first from the beginning that we move on step by step. We don’t reach directly to our destination. We follow step by step in every work. Absolutely, it will help you to reach  your goal because it was helpful for others to make their future dreams come true. We shouldn’t be afraid to make our own journey, so it will lead us to success. Many people are happy today because they moved on step to step liked Mahatma Gandhi did in his life. I found many great people who have used this idea presented by Lao Tzu in history because it helps them to make their future achieve success.

One Change – by Sukay Slea

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” Mahatma Gandhi, who was a strong and encouraging man, said this quote. He was born in 1969, in Porbamdar. Mahatma Gandhi was known for the Indian independence movement and for his non-violence. In my own words, this quote means if you want a difference in the world, you must be positive and make change in yourself first.
This quote is important because many people who feel pessimistic about the world have to know that in order to see a difference in their life, change must start with them first. For example, an aunt of mine told me her past story about when she was young. She got raped and thought life was terrible. My aunt thought her destiny and pride was over. She made the wrong decision by hanging out with bad friends, doing drugs, and stealing people’s things.  All her family could do was to pray for her and give her advice.  After some years, she made up her mind to stop all the spiteful things she had been doing. She went to high school and college and got a degree from both schools. Now she is a lawyer, and she is studying nursing to go back home to become a doctor.
I agree with Mahatma Gandhi’s quote because it is the same thing as setting your mind to something and doing it. If you are having trouble with what you want to overcome, you can cooperate with people to get more ideas and ask people about your assignment to see if it would capture anyone’s attention. For example, I started seeing changes in my education after I took action on it. In middle school, I was lazy. I slept a lot in class, and I didn’t do my class assignments. I was doing very poorly in all of my classes. All of my friends went to the 8th grade, but I was still in 7th grade. When I saw all my friends moving to the higher level, I was jealous and needed changes so I decided to talk to my favorite teacher for advice.  During my 8th grade, I took her advice and put it to use. I did all my class work without giving up. Before I noticed it, I was in high school.
Making a positive difference and change in the world is one thing you want to be able to accomplish because you can encourage people to do the same. For example, when I was six years old, I didn’t like taking a shower. My sister, who didn’t like to take a shower either, was forcing me to go take a shower. One day, my sister was forcing me to go take a shower, and then my mom told her to leave me alone. My mom said to her, “If you want her to like taking a shower, you have to like it first, and then she will learn from you.” In life, if you want to make a difference, you have to be sure you are making that same change, and then people can learn from you.
In our community, there are always people trashing things all over because they don’t like that place. For instance, students from different schools came to Catalina for summer school and I overheard them chatting about how Catalina school is stinky and dirty. At the same time, one girl was eating her lunch and putting her trash on the school campus. I went to her and said, “If you want the school to smell fit, you need to stop putting your trash on the ground.” If you are making a change somewhere and others are trying to make things worse, you can always speak up.
In conclusion, being positive and making a difference in the world is all our world is about. In order to see difference, change must start with you. Seeking help and cooperating with people can help you get more ideas. When you make up your mind to make a positive difference, stick with it because it might be the only chance to change people’s lives and the world.

Motivation – by Kedar Magar

“Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person.”  This is the quotation from Mother Teresa, who was born in Macedonia in 1910. From age 18, she was a Roman Catholic nun who became a missionary in India. In this quote, she is saying that each person can do some work to help without waiting for the government or other leaders. If we see something is wrong or unfair, we can try to fix it even if our leaders will not try. It may take courage to be the first to stand alone, but we should do the right thing. We should not wait for others.
I chose this quote because I believe it has a great message. It is important to do what we can to make things better. Mother Teresa did this in her own life. She spent her life helping the sick, hungry, and homeless people in Calcutta. She did not wait for the government to help those people. This quote can be a motivation to people to help when they can.
I feel motivated to do some things in the future when I see some issues people face. I have kindness in my heart for other people, so I am ready to do some work without waiting to any leader. I feel proud of myself to protect other people from danger and to give rights. I know I will not become a hero like Mother Teresa, Rosa Parks, Gandhi, and other heroes, but I know that people who I save will say to me I am a hero for them. This quote is not only for me to be motivated, but it help lots of people to be motivated to do some things in the future.
One great example of a person who did good things was Mohandas Gandhi. He was a successful lawyer who saw injustices in South Africa. He did not wait for the government to change it. He fought for equality for all people in South Africa and again, later, in India.  In India, Gandhi became a great hero. He lived like a poor person, but later the people got freedom for India.
Another example of a person who did it alone was Rosa Parks. She was an African -American secretary in Alabama in 1955. She was riding in a bus and the driver tried to make her give her seat to a white man. This was the custom in the Southern part of America in those days of discrimination. Rosa Parks refused and was arrested. She did not wait for the custom to change. This was the beginning of the Civil Rights change in America.
From the quote of the Mother Teresa, we can learn how to be brave and take action when we see a problem. Do not wait for other persons or leaders if you can do something to make a change. Maybe you cannot be like Gandhi or Mother Teresa, but you can be a hero to somebody in some small way every day.

Fight for Your Dreams – by Tuyizere Frorasi

“Get up, stand up, and stand up for your rights. Get up, stand up, and don’t give up the fight,’’. Bob Marley was born in the village of Nine Miles in Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica. He was born on February 6,1945 and he died on May 11, 1981. Bob Marley sang and was a music icon and also a song writer. This quote means to me that no matter what you want or try to do, don’t let anyone push you around or stop you. Just get up and keep trying to go where you want to go. People may humiliate you and also not listen to you, but you still have to try and see. Just stand up, look them in the eyes, and tell them that you are not afraid of them and you will show them how you feel.
This quote is important to me because sometimes people would do anything to keep you under ground, but when you decide to stand on your own and chose not to give up, they will be surprised with what you did or how you did it.Let people know that you will do whatever it takes to make your dream a success, no matter what. Sometimes I feel like I’m shy to let people know what I am hoping to achieve, but I have to fight for my dreams and what I want.
I agree with this quote because there are people who like to see you down and giving up your dream and your hopes, but they won’t help you to get up to your feet. Some people from my country would sit back and watch you giving up your dreams. Some of my friends would enjoy seeing their friends hurting and struggling to reach her/his dreams, but they won’t help them. However, there will be a time you will be tired of the people who are pushing you around who will try to tell you to give up on what you hope to have or achieve. So you will get up and stand up for your right; don’t give up until you reach what you want to have. Tell the world who you want to be and what you are trying to achieve in your life.
This quote reminds me of some people from history, like Abraham Lincoln who fought for enslaved people to be free. He stood up for the people and for the country to unite together. Also Martin Luther King Jr. stood up for the African Americans in the 1950’s to tell the American people that we are all equal, no matter what. He really helped a lot of people during the time of segregation. We still remember these two men, especially Martin Luther King, Jr.  These people never gave up in what they believed.
The quote teaches us not to let anyone use you or use your ideas to get credit. Also, don’t listen to others who don’t want you to see you succeed in what you want to do. Just get up, stand up to get to where you dream. Don’t forget what you want to say so you can reach your goals. We should do whatever it takes to make sure we are not giving up our dreams. In our life we need to stand up, for what is right for us and reach our hopes. No matter how you feel about reaching your dreams, don’t let anyone keep you waiting any longer. Just get up and make it happen. Fight for your dreams, and don’t give up any one minute in a day.

Being silent about things that matter  - by Abdi Gelle

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” This quote was made by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This man was a black man who wanted to bring peace to everyone. He was the leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta. He lived in the 1930’s when black people didn’t have the right to do anything. He fought for peace and brought peace to everyone. In the end, he was assassinated and died on April 4, 1968. Dr. King is a person we should never forget.
His quote caught my attention because it explains how important it is to care about what is happening in the world. We should know what is important to our lives and fight for the things we care about. Becoming silent can just make our lives worse. This quote is telling us to speak up for ourselves. This quote is related to my life. When I become silent and forget the things that matter to me, I lose everything. This can be a part of a problem in my education. If I stop working hard and forget about school work, I will get a F. This F can stop me from graduating high school and going to college. We can’t do anything without education. We will just make our lives worse. It’s really important to watch the steps we are making. It’s important to think about what we are doing. We should never let ourselves down. Having a good grade is something that really matters. It is something we should never become silent about it. That is why it caught my attention.
Many countries like Syria, Somalia, Libya, and Iraq begin to fall apart when the people in those countries become silent. Their lives begin to end at that same time, so they lose everything they care about. This quote is connected to many countries and many lives.  People lose everything they wanted because they become silent and do nothing about what is happening. When leaders become weak, most people will become weak too. If no one is leading us, we will never move forward. This is a problem my home country of Somalia has. The people who are supposed to lead us are the ones who let us down. The people in my country believe there is nothing they can do. They believe they can’t fight the government and so decided to stay away. They become silent about the things that matter. They give up hope and lose many of the things they care about. It’s the end of our lives when we let ourselves down. People who lose hope also lose their home countries and some lose their family. They don’t try to do anything even though they see their country falling apart. It’s the history of many people and many countries, including the U.S and some other countries. This problem is still in the world. It’s a problem many people have.
This quote explains a lot about what’s happening in the world. This quote is connected to our lives because we give up things without thinking about it. There are some people in the world who were working on something like becoming famous soccer players, but they just stopped working on it. They were working on it for many years, and at the end they gave up. Becoming a soccer player really mattered to them, but they just gave up and thought they can’t continue. They just destroyed their goal. We could not just give up on things that matter to us. We are just destroying our lives. It’s always the best to stick with your goal no matter what happens. We should always protect what we care about.
In conclusion, this quote is teaching us to refrain from keeping silent. Dr. King is telling us not to sit on the side lines and watch while we lose everything we care about. We need to fight back. We have to fight for justice. He is telling us to get on our feet and fight for what we care about. We should pay attention to this quote because we may lose many things that we want to protect. We may lose something that will never be replaced. It’s hard to get back something you already lost and that is why we need to pay attention before we lose what we wanted. We should not let our guards down. We should always stay strong and never become silent about the things that matter to us.

Victory Belongs to the Most Persevering – by Jesus Silvas

Napoleon Bonaparte was a military leader who said this: “The victory belongs to the most persevering.” This quote means that you have to keep on doing what you want to until you reach your goal. Don’t ever give up on yourself or your goal.
This quote is important to me because many bad things have happened to lots of people. It also happened to my family. We did not have enough money to pay our bills. We had some hard times by paying all our home bills.  We never gave up. We kept on doing all we could to keep our home.
I agree with this quote because it is true that victory belongs to the most persevering. Never give up and you will have everything you want or complete all you want in your life. If you give up, you well be on the streets like a homeless person. We had been really struggling with money, but we kept trying and we got to where we wanted and no more asking people for money.
People don’t give up for anything. The Pakistan girl, Malala Yousafsai, is never giving up because she knows that education is important for her and her future. She is persevering because she wants a good job and a good life. All the people from Pakistan say she can’t have education, and they say she won’t have an education because she is a girl. She even got shot, but she is still fighting for her education because she really cares about her goal.
Napoleon Bonaparte was a French military leader who was born on August 15, 1769. He said, “Victory belongs to the most persevering,” and this is true. Never give up and do everything you can in your life for your future.

Before Thinking of Changing the World, Change Yourself - by Khadra Issak

“Everybody thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.’’ Leo Tolstoy wrote this quote. Tolstoy was a Russian political Leader born in Yasnata, Polyara. His parents died when he was young, and Tolstoy died in 1910 at the age of 82. He died because of pneumonia. This quote means a lot to me because if a person wants to change the world, they have to look at themselves first.
This quote is interesting to me because it makes me think of people changing the world. It matters because before changing the world the person has to be a good person. Now in this world people just say,” I can change the world”, but they can’t because they are not proud of themselves. There are people in this world right now that are thinking of changing the world, but they don’t know how or they do not believe in themselves.
For example, now people want to change the world, but they don’t behave; like some students act badly and don’t listen, but they want the world to change. Another example is in my country, some people wanted to change the world when the war was going on,but some other people wouldn’t stop and didn’t want peace. For example, the people who were in Somalia wanted to change the world, but they were hurting others and killing people.
On the other hand, there was one person named Ahmed Yusuf. He wanted to change the world, and he was proud of himself, and he did the right thing. He made people come together and talk about the problems in the country of Somalia; they solved the problems together to make more peace in the world so then the world could become peaceful. The problems he addressed were killing people for no reason, being mean to people, or fighting for food. Ahmed Yusufalways wanted to make the world a better place, but no one would listen to him. He was the first person to change. He changed himself thinking about what is better for the world. He became a strong person.
The lesson Tolstoy’s quote is teaching us is that you have to be proud of yourself before thinking of changing the world. You have to respect the world to make it a better place and you also have to respect others’ countries. You have to believe in yourself. We should pay attention to Tolstoy‘s words because they are important to our country. It is also important for other people who need to know about what is good for the world and what change we can make. People should think of changing themselves first.

Everybody can be great - by Krishna Gautam
“Everybody can be great because anybody can serve.  You don’t have to have a college degree to serve.  You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve.  You only need a heart full of grace.  A soul generated by love.”  This quote was said by Martin Luther King Jr.  He lived in Atlanta, Georgia.  He is famous for speeches he gave on the Civil Rights Movement.  This speech was about removing racial discrimination.  He lived from January, 1929 until 1955. The quote means that everyone can serve, even old people like our parents.   They don’t have a college degree, but they are still helping our community and family.  I don’t think that people have to have a college degree to serve.
This quote is important for me because my family doesn’t have a college degree and they are still helping my family.   I want to show them that they can do something in the world without a college degree.  I chose this quote because I saw a lot of people serving without college degree such as my brother; he doesn’t have a college degree, but still he helps my family with our needs like taking us to the hospital and store.  I don’t think people need a college degree to serve.
Rosa Parks fought for African American people.   She wasn’t a woman that had a college degree.   She was just a simple lady that worked as a seamstress, but still she fought for rights.  She shows power to other women. Rosa Park shows that women can do something to make the world better.
In my home country some people have a college degree, but not everybody because they can’t go to school.   People in my country have to work every day to feed their kids.  If people need a college degree to serve then how did other poor people work to feed their kids? How do they find a job? People don’t have to have a college degree to serve.  We only need a heart full of grace.  A soul generated by love.
For example, Anne Frank was a young lady.   She was not even a high school student, but she helped to change the world at such a young age. She helped us by giving us good advice to trust in ourself.  She showed courage and joy during war. She was an amazing girl and role model to many people such as those who are in the same situation as she was.  She didn’t need any college degree or a high school diploma.   She just helped many people without a diploma.
Another example is Mother Teresa.  She didn’t have a degree. Still she dedicated her life to taking care of the poor.  Through her compassion and care, Mother Theresa had a great power in the world around her.  Mother Teresa was truly an angel.   She shared love with poor people.
Everyone can be great; anybody can serve.  You don’t have to have a college degree to serve.  I believe that people can serve without a college degree, and I have seen a lot of people serving without a college degree, such as students at Catalina High School.  They don’t have a college degree, but they are here with us in our community.  Students in Catalina are serving without degrees, and they are friends with people from all over to world. We need hearts full of grace, souls generated by love.  We don’t need a college degree to serve.

Never Give Up by Waled Nwaish
Talk does not cook rice”. This quote is a Chinese proverb. It means to me that one should do something, not just talk about it.
This Chinese proverb caught my attention because many people want to do something or change something, but instead they just talk. For example, I want to do a lot of things like different kinds of sports and to be an actor in a play, but I never get to do them because I don’t have time. I agree with this quote because if you want to do something then you need to take action. I want to act, but I never tried or asked to act. I also wanted to sky dive, but it didn’t work to sky dive because I don’t know where it is. I can change this thing by going for it and it can happen if I get try. That’s why one should take action.
This quote connects with another story about Martin Luther King Jr.  King helped get racial equality for Africans- Americans.   He is best known for his leadership in the fight for civil rights in the United States.  He was born in Atlanta, Georgia on Jan 15, 1929. King gave a famous speech called “I have a dream.” However he didn’t just talk about getting racial equality for Africans- Americans; he took action. For example, when Rosa Parks got arrested, King fought to get her out of jail. All these people took action.
Another person who didn’t just talk is Gandhi. Gandhi was considered the father of the Indian independence movement. He left India when he was 18 years old to become a lawyer. As an Indian nationalist leader, he led the struggle for India’s independence from the United Kingdom by advocating nonviolent noncooperation from 1915. He took action. He didn’t just watch or just talk.
The lesson of this Chinese proverb is to work for something you want to do. It might be hard to do, but keep trying; never give up. Two examples of people who didn’t give up are Martin Luther King Jr. and Gandhi. It’s always good to remember this quote because everyone should take action. People will not get whatever they want or the world they want. That’s why people should take action.

Dreams are Tomorrow’s Reality  - by Bambi Ndjibu

“It is difficult to say what is impossible, for the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow.” This quote was said by Robert H. Goddard who was an American professor, physicist, and inventor. He was born on October 5, 1882 and died on August 10, 1945. Robert H. Goddard’s words mean that we should be optimistic in everything, so it will be difficult to say what is impossible. Also, we should make our dream come true by thinking about positive things to happen so we can live the reality of the future.
This quote interested me because it really showed my personality. I always think about positive things to happen by looking at my dream of yesterday and hope that the reality is tomorrow. I always encourage myself by saying nothing is impossible to God. Being a son or daughter of God, nothing can be impossible for the dream of yesterday which is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow.
I agree with this quote because it really caught my attention, and it’s also a life that I am living these days. I am living the dream of yesterday which is my hope of today. For example, when I was in the refugee camp, it was difficult to say things are impossible even when life was very hard for me. I didn’t give up with prayer; I asked God to change my life and make my dream come true. I hoped that one day I would live my dream like a video game. I didn’t know that I could graduate from high school, but I had a big dream that helped me to hope for the reality of tomorrow.  I stretch myself to a different level by working hard in every class. Also, I hoped that by working hard, good things would happen tomorrow. Now, my dream comes true because I am graduating in May; that makes my hope true and my dream very optimistic.
Similarly, Laurent Desire Kabila was an optimist. He said, “When we are dreaming with others, it’s the beginning of the reality; Dreams are today’s answers to tomorrow’s question.”  The Democratic Republic of Congo got the independence in 1960 from the French. First, it was very difficult for the Congo to be independent, but Laurent Desire Kabila risked the impossible to create the possible by accepting to lead the country.  He hoped that by being a president, he would change a lot of things. Additionally, he thought that being independent was better than being dependent. He had the dream of Congo being a big country in the future. Laurent Desire Kabila confronted the French and told them that he had dreamed with others for the reality of today. He told the congress that he had a dream for the Congo which was illegal to tell the congress. Everyone was afraid to tell the congress; it was very difficult and impossible to stand in front of the French and ask for the independence, but Laurent Desire did tell them that he had a dream for the Congo and hoped that the reality would be tomorrow.
Another good example is of my brother. He had a big dream about having a baby girl. He had four boys and wanted a baby girl. When he got four boys, his wife couldn’t believe that God could help them by giving them a baby girl. My brother prayed and hoped that nothing was impossible to God. Finally, he got a beautiful little princess who is now two months old. He impressed me with his hopes which come true today.  He dreamed, hoped, and finally he has the reality today.
In conclusion, the lesson is that a dream helps us to hope for tomorrow’s life. Goddard’s words teach us that the reality of tomorrow is yesterday’s dream. We shouldn’t think about negative things in our life, but rather hope for good things to happen tomorrow. If everyone hopes that everything is possible, nothing will be hard tomorrow. Everyone should have a dream for himself or herself.  The big success of tomorrow’s reality is in being optimistic.

Take Action and Make a Bright Future – by Dil Ghaley
“You may never know what result will come of your actions, but if you do nothing, there will be no result”, wrote Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi (Great soul) was born in Parbandar, 1869 and died in 1948. Gandhi was considered the father of the Indian Independence movement. He led the struggle for Indian independence from the UK by advocating nonviolent noncooperation from 1915. He was imprisoned several times by British authorities and was highly influential in the Nationalist Congress Party and the independence negotiations in 1947. He took action, and he got credit for it; thus, everybody respected him as a great soul.
I agree with this quote because without doing anything, you can’t get success or results in your life. It means to me that one must do something to get results. Nobody knows about the future, but if you work hard you will get results about your actions. Every single person can do a lot of things if they want to or try to. They might be successful in their life if they work hard and take action.
This quote is very important and interesting to me because without work you can’t get pay. I selected this quote because it’s related to my life. For example, I didn’t do my homework last time and I didn’t get any points. I didn’t have any action related to the work, so I didn’t get any points. If I do my homework, I will get points; so, without work, you can get nothing. You have to take action to get something and don’t wait for anybody.
I think the message of the quote is you don’t know how much power you have or what kinds of things you can do in your life. Nobody can do anything for you. You have to do your own work right away. For example, Rosa Parks, a 42 year old African American woman, was arrested on a bus. She came from work and she sat near the middle of the bus. Soon all of the seats in the bus were filled. A white man entered the bus; the driver told Rosa Parks all blacks sitting just behind the white section to give up their seats so that the man could sit there. She said no and the bus driver called the police. Rosa Parks was arrested and convicted of violating the law of segregation, knew as “Jim Crow Laws. She fought for civil rights and every African American supported her. They got equality between black and white because of her action.
Rosa Parks didn’t know what results would come of her action, but she worked hard and fought for her rights. If you work, you’ll get credit like Ms.Parks. It means a lot in every single life because hard work makes your life better. Action is a big thing in life because without action you can’t get any success in your goal. If you want to catch your goal, then work for it. You may never know what result will come of your action, you may find success or not in your life, but if you do nothing, then there will be no result.

Rise Bob Marley  - by Tedros Gedam

Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights, get up, stand up, and don’t give up the fight.”  Bob Marley was the one who said theis quote.  Bob Marley was born on February 6, 1945 in St. Ann. parish, Jamaica. He was Jamaican reggae singer until he died in Miami, Florida on May 11, 1981 when he was 36 years old. He died because of the spread of melanoma to his lungs and brain. His words encourage me to do something to do the right things in life and stand up for others who can’t stand up for themselves.
This quote is interesting because it give us motivation to do something about what matters. It has the meaning to fight for something worth fighting for and it is teaching us  to do the right things and make good choices about life. This quote is important to me because my mother stood up for her children and brought us here to live better and have rights where we can live peacefully. In our home country war was going to start, Ethiopian and Eritrea wanted to control both countries, Ethiopia and Eritrea, but Ethiopia refused. So, before the war started, my mother stood up for us and brought us here.
I agree with this quote because a lot of people don’t stand up or fight for the rights of others or their own rights. When they see something wrong, they don’t get up to fight for the right things because they are afraid to stand up. For example, take the history of Sudan. The Sudan people are slaves, denied their rights to identity when they are given new Arab names and denied their rights to freedom of religion when they are subject to forbidden conventions. Why don’t they stand up together and fight for their rights and for their freedom for their kids?
Rosa Parks stood up to fight for civil rights and her rights as a human being. Rosa Parks is the woman who sat in the front seats of the bus. When the white passenger got on the bus, the seats were full so the bus driver asked Rosa to get up for him, but she refused. The driver called the police and she got arrested. Because of what she refused – to get up – she changed something. People were coming together because of her bravery.  She saw something that was wrong and nobody else was doing anything, so she got up and fought for the rights.
“Get up, stand up, fight for the rights, and don’t give up the fight.” This quote is to encourage people to help each other when they see helpless human being. Even if someone is homeless, it is still about doing the right thing as a human being. We should stand up and help him even though he is homeless. We are all god’s creation; we are human. It is about doing the right thing.

What Should We Do In Our Lives - by Keyrose Stephen
“There is no greater gift to future generations than that we do the work God has asked us to do: Love one another, that the world might be made right.’’ This quote means that we, all people on earth, should do what’s best for our lives. We should work together to make the world greater and more powerful. We should stand together and love each other for what’s best for all people. This quote also means to me that we all should be together to find what’s good for our world, and so that we all could become a big family to make the world greater.  This quote is by a young woman named Marianne Williamson. She was born on July 8, 1952 in Houston.
I selected this quote because, in my home country, our religion is Christianity and we believe in God’s words. We have faith in the Lord and we trust him in his words.
I agree with this quote. My reason is because, without God’s words, we wouldn’t know about strength and we wouldn’t know about knowledge. In my home country, our grandparents say that in the Bible, God’s words are worthy. They say this because the Bible says that if it wasn’t for us, he wouldn’t die on the cross for all living things in his world. There is nothing better to do in life, but to do what the Lord asked us to do because he’s the one that died for our sins.
“Love one another that the world might be made right.” A family in the Marshall Islands used to hate each other, even though they lived in the same house. They had been going to church a lot, but they still didn’t get along. One day a boy from the family prayed for his family so that there could be a love around them in the house. Everyday he saw his family argue. One day he sat down with his family and talked about loving one another. His family members were really shocked about what he was saying.  After the boy had asked them to be strong and grateful to each other, the family became a strong and loving family.
‘’Love one another that the world might be made right.’’ Loving each other can make a difference in our lives. Loving a stranger is the same as loving your close friends. Loving each other can make yourself be part of other people’s lives because when you show that you love them, they will take it back to love you and care for you and your life. People around the world need family like a homeless person, and they are looking for a family that could accept them to love them and take care of them. It’s good that some people take them in and treat them like a family member. Like I said before, other strangers in the world are parts of your family.
We, all living things, should make our world right so that we could have peace and love in our lives. Love one another and hold hands on tight together that the world might be made right. There is nothing better to do then doing what he has asked us to do for him.

STEP UP - by Amanuel Logo
“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter.” This quote was written by Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King was an American clergyman and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, and he died on April 4, 1968. “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” Tell the world what you want to say. Don’t be silent to speak for your rights.
People should try to make the world better, but some people watch the world grow as it is. Actually this cannot help us to make our community better. If people take their step and are brave enough to talk; they can change the world. We need to spit out our words, so the world can hear us. If we step up to speak up, then we can have peace in no time.
Martin Luther King, Jr, Abraham Lincoln, and Gandhi were not silent about their rights and freedom. They got up and they spoke from their heart to people about freedom. For example, Martin Luther King, Jr. was following his dream and he succeeded in achieving his dream; his dream is still alive with us. Similarly, Abraham Lincoln didn’t let slavery keep going; he saw, he stood up, he spoke, and he didn’t just speak. He took action to stop slavery. Finally, the father of India, Gandhi, believed in peace and harmony. When the British wanted to fight, Gandhi didn’t fight by weapons with the British. He fought with words. He didn’t want to let the Indian people work for no peace, and he didn’t want to let his country separate; so he showed his power by words.
The first lady of the Civil Rights Movement, Rosa Parks, is another example of someone who made a difference in the world. She didn’t want to stay silent or to wait for the world to change. She sat on the front seats in a bus to let the white people stand up, so they could see the black people’s life. She wanted to change things, so she could see how the white people would act or if they could change the laws. She didn’t just think. She took action after thinking to change the world.
If we know something is not right, then we must just do something to change it. Catalina High School in Tucson, Arizona has a lot of student problems- for example: bullying, drugs, and ditching classes. If I want to make my school better, then I should tell my teachers. When I see my friends doing drugs or when they bully other kids, instead of telling my teachers, I just think in my head and I just say, “They are my friends, so it’s okay. I don’t have to tell my teachers.” If the students want to keep the school clean and safe, then we should report any problem immediately.
Step up, speak up, and take action if you want to make a difference in the world. Don’t think about what your country can do for you, but think about what you can do for your country. We are from a lot of different countries, and we can still make a difference in the world. We are the people of freedom, and we are never letting it go away. “A man who won’t die for something is not fit to live.”
